If you have to ask me what my favourite steakhouse is, the answer is easy… the Local Grill. The Local Grill is based in Parktown North and has been around since 2002. The owner, Steve Maresch, follows a strict “field to fork” principle meaning that the beef is sourced from the best producers and then aged at the restaurant and cut to order.

I’ve visited the Local Grill on numerous occasions. After recently having noticed them listed on the Dineplan app – and subsequently having experienced a sudden steak craving – I decided to make a booking on the app and pay them another visit. For starters I had the grilled calamari tubes served with lemon butter and sweet chilli jam; absolutely delicious. My benedict, also a calamari fan, opted for the calamari heads. These too were a great choice. For my main meal I had one of the specials of the day, the 500g fillet on the bone. The quality of the steak at the Local Grill never ceases to amaze me and as expected the fillet on the bone too was superb! For sides we ordered the mashed potato and the creamed spinach and butternut. This mashed potato is served with a rich beef jus; it’s definitely one of my favourite sides at the Local Grill. The Local Grill also boasts a really great and extensive wine list showcasing many South African favourites.

The service at the Local Grill is always great. If you’re interested in seeing the kitchen and hearing about the beef aging process, the staff will gladly give you a little tour. The restaurant has a lovely elegant feel to it and is well located within the trendy foodie region of Parktown North. The beef is always phenomenal. Steve is hands on at all times and his passion, for all things beef related, speaks to the great quality maintained by the Local Grill. I know I’ll certainly be back again soon for my next steak night.
