Tokara Wine Estate and Restaurant

If you’ve been following me for some time, you’ll know that I’m a regular visitor of Tokara Restaurant am a huge fan of Tokara wine. So much so, that it was the wine served at my very own wedding.

What to Order at Tokara Wine Estate and Restaurant

Tokara Wine Estate is based in the Stellenbosch region nestled on the upper slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. The wine estate boasts award-winning Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Most recently, the Tokara Elgin Reserve Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2022, was awarded the winner in this year’s prestigious FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10. This wine showcases an array of typical cooler climate aromas of passionfruit, Cape gooseberry, lemongrass and a signature wisp of blackcurrant leaf that align on the palate with vibrant freshness ending with a lingering saline finish.

Is Tokara Wine Estate and Restaurant Worth Visiting?

Tokara was also awarded two Global Masters Gold medals at the recent Global Sauvignon Blanc Masters 2023 which took place in the UK. The two gold medals were awarded to the flagship Bordeaux-style blend, the Director’s Reserve White 2020 and the single varietal Sauvignon Blanc 2023 from the premium range. The competition run by The Drinks Business, Europe’s leading trade publication at the forefront of global trends, annually identifies the best Sauvignon Blancs from around the world at every price point.

Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2020 is a classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The wine has amazing clarity and depth. Passionfruit and pink grapefruit intermingle with hints of cassis and freshly toasted brioche. The wine is full and rich with a zesty persistence. While Tokara Sauvignon Blanc 2023 is refreshing and crisp with a slight oyster shell salinity and an appealing mix of fresh lime blossom, ripe passionfruit and sliced Cape gooseberry; perfect for summer sipping.

Tokara’s prowess as one of the country’s top producers of Sauvignon Blanc attests to the forward-thinking vision of owners GT and Anne-Marie Ferreira to produce world class wines without compromise. This single-minded focus over the past 20 years combined with the mastery of viticulturist Aidan Morton and winemaker Stuart Botha, is the backbone of Tokara’s exceptional wines vintage after vintage.

The wine tasting experience at Tokara comes highly recommended. The tasting area showcases gorgeous views overlooking the vineyards. Following wine tasting, a meal at the restaurant is the perfect way to end off your Tokara experience. Tokara Restaurant offers a concise menu with selected meals which change seasonally – one of the many reasons I look forward to always returning and trying something different. Talented Chef Carolize Coetzee has just released a new menu boasting an array of delicious summer dishes. 

You can look forward to the likes of beautiful steamed west coast mussels with papaya, naartjie, kapokbos infused coconut sauce, blood sorrel and toasted ciabatta as well as braised pork belly with parsnip, pak choi, king oyster mushroom, apple cider gastrique and mushroom whiskey jus among many other vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options too.  The restaurant is exquisite serving fantastic food alongside exceptional service. It’s no surprise that Tokara Restaurant, under the leadership of Chef Carolize, has recently been awarded a JHP Gourmet Guide One Plate (an establishment deemed to serve “Excellent Cuisine”). Tokara Restaurant is also listed on the prestigious World’s 50 Best Discovery list.
