Last Friday I joined Wickleys Steakhouse for their food and wine pairing evening. Wickleys Steakhouse is a welcome addition to the Fourways area. The restaurant is a little over a year old now and specialises in none other, than beef! Wickleys Steakhouse is now offering tasting events; special evenings boasting wine pairing and exceptional food.

We arrived on Friday evening and were seated at the restaurant to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset from the stunning roof top restaurant. Shortly after, we were relocated to a private 12 seater room which was set up with many empty wine glasses. Micheal, from CAM Inspired Wines, took us through the exclusive Le Bonheur tastings. We started with a beautiful light Sauvignon Blanc which was paired with a salmon dish. The salmon was tender and cooked to perfection boasting fresh citrus flavours which paired perfectly which the Sauvignon Blanc. The second dish was sous vide (slowly cooked in a kind of water bath) beef fillet with a creamy mushroom sauce alongside a bed of mashed potato topped with truffle butter. Wow! This dish was absolutely incredible and certainly my favourite dish of the evening. It was paired with a lovely 2020 Merlot; a beautifully smooth and elegant merlot boasting blackcurrant fragrant notes. The third meal of the evening was ostrich which was served with a scrumptious cranberry compote. The ostrich was beautifully cooked and tasted incredible! The dish was paired with the most exquisite 2019 Estate Barrel Reserve; a rich and bold classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This gorgeous Le Bonheur Estate Reserve is a selection of only the finest barrels of top vintages. It’s also a collector’s item and can be matured, in the right conditions, for up to 20 years. For dessert, we were served decadent chocolate brownies with fresh strawberries, ice-cream and a shot of Amarula to be poured over the dessert. The dessert was delicious and the perfect ending to a lovely meal. We ended off our tasting with a glass of the 2020 Charlima Red Blend. Another superb blend comprising Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

I had the most amazing experience at Wickleys Steakhouse. The food and service were fabulous and the wine, of course, equally on par. I got to meet some lovely people who also joined in for the wine pairing. The food and wine pairing costs around R630 per person for a four course meal with very generous amounts of wine that seem to keep coming (in all honesty I wasn’t feeling too spritely the next morning – thankfully I’ve now recovered ;-)). I highly recommend this very well priced food and wine pairing experience. Thank you so much to Raphael and Michael for a fantastic evening. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to visiting Wickleys Steakhouse again soon.
