In December, during my European travels, I was fortunate enough to visit the magical city of Prague. Prague has been a bucket list travel city for me for as long as I can remember and being able to experience the Christmas festivities over there was something really special. There is something quite extraordinary about a cold Christmas with beautifully decorated streets; not forgetting the Christmas markets, gluhwein and of course good food.

My benedict and I visited Alcron on our very first day in Prague. Alcron is a fine dining restaurant located in the Radisson Blu Hotel in the heart of Prague and at the time of our visit, a one Michelin star restaurant. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the hostess and quickly seated at a beautifully set table. The restaurant is modern with an intimate setting housing only a few tables in true fine dining style. Alcron has a unique menu, offering a choice of a three, four or five course tasting menu (depending on how hungry you are and how much you’re prepared to spend). Their menu offers a range of cold and hot dishes as well as desserts, so you’re welcome to mix and match for your choice of tasting menu. I really loved the idea of being able to pick my own courses and having such a wide variety to choose from. Alcron also offers an extensive wine list boasting many Czech Republic wines too. My benedict and I went with sommelier’s suggestion and selected the Muscat Moravia; a local white grape wine. To start with, we were served a complimentary bread dish with four different types of butter. The butters were homemade and very flavourful. When your meal commences with being offered four different butters just for the bread course, you know you’re in for a treat! Some of our selected cold dishes included the smoked duck breast and the roasted Jerusalem artichoke. Both beautifully presented dishes that were delicious. I selected the seared sea scallops as one of my hot dishes. It was served with cauliflower, roasted king oyster mushrooms and homemade smoked bacon. This dish was absolutely superb! I also selected the farm chicken as another one of my hot dishes. It was served with chickpeas and mushrooms. The chicken was outstanding – probably the tastiest chicken I’ve ever eaten – cooked to perfection! My benedict opted for the lobster bisque served with sweet corn; a rich and flavourful dish. His second hot dish was the venison loin (of a local deer breed) served with chestnuts and smoked marrow. Another great dish. For dessert, I had the “pumpkin cheesecake”. This was a crumble served with pumpkin ice cream. It was such a unique and interesting dessert; thoroughly enjoyed it. My benedict chose the cold and hot chocolate textures dessert. This is a real treat for all the chocolate fans – myself included – and an absolutely delicious dessert.

I loved my experience at Alcron. Everything from the restaurant layout, to the table setting, to the menu variety and plating exceeded my expectations. The service was incredible right from our time of arrival throughout our visit. I loved the menu options and the freedom to mix and match any combination of dishes which allows for the creation of an individual tasting menu. The food was phenomenal. I would strongly recommend a visit to Alcron for all food lovers who find themselves in the beautifully city of Prague.
