A few weeks ago, I was introduced to At Kate’s Kitchen. At Kate’s Kitchen is based in the trendy dining area of Parktown North. I visited them on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. At Kate’s Kitchen is all about elegant home style cooking and real food; a kind of 'kitchen away from home' type of restaurant. I’d never heard of At Kate’s Kitchen to be honest, but after visiting them I definitely felt like I had been missing out. At Kate’s Kitchen is certainly a hidden gem and quite an incredible one at that!
The restaurant is intimate and stylishly laid out; inviting and welcoming to say the least. My benedict and I started our meal with a couple of cocktails. I tried their cosmopolitan and he selected the pina colada. They were made by our waiter just behind the open plan bar in full view of our table – both tasted great! We then then jumped straight into our main meals. Being a cold winter’s day, I opted for the oxtail. This was a hearty and rich oxtail stew braised in red wine, celery, carrots, tomato and garlic. I enjoyed my oxtail with a side of the creamy mushroom mashed potato with peas. The meal was absolutely incredible. I love oxtail and in all honesty, I cannot remember when last I had such an amazing oxtail dish! My benedict chose the bacon wrapped stuffed chicken. This was chicken breast stuffed with basil pesto, mozzarella cheese, wrapped in a blanket of crispy streaky bacon with a side of grilled vegetables. This was just another exceptional meal from At Kate’s Kitchen. The chicken was perfectly cooked, still tender and juicy, while the bacon had a lovely crunch to it. For dessert we shared the peppermint crisp pudding. It really doesn’t get more South African home style cooking than that. It was a tasty and enjoyable dessert.
At Kate’s Kitchen is very elegant and stylish. The service was great and our waiter only had the best recommendations! The food at At Kate’s Kitchen was really fantastic. They take a great deal of pride in their menu and every dish exudes a real passion for food. Everything from the complimentary (very unique) potato bread, to the main dishes and the optional side dishes, as well as the desserts were all really impressive. I will most certainly be back to visit At Kate’s Kitchen again in the near future!
