A few weeks ago, while attending to one of my Cape Town projects, I was fortunate enough to be invited to dine at Chefs. Chefs is a restaurant located in town on St. Johns Street, a great spot for a quick lunch or after work meal. This restaurant is pushing boundaries and breaking all traditions as far as what one can expect from a typical dining experience. Chefs boasts a truly unique and new eating out concept. They’ve done away with waiters, tipping and even menus. They set three available meals each day and these are loaded onto Chefs’ website each morning (for those who prefer to know what they’re in for). If you prefer a little suspense, you choose your meal option via the iPad at your table upon arrival and simply relax while your meal is prepared and then served to you by the chefs themselves. Chefs is all about the “fast fine” experience. They serve good food in a simple environment and a simple way. Don’t be fooled into thinking the food is simple. Chefs is headed up by Chef Jenny Ward, who graduated from The Institute of Culinary Arts with cum laude… suffice to say this humble lady knows her stuff.
I arrived at Chefs on a Wednesday evening for dinner and met up with a good friend of mine who was joining me. We were very quickly offered some wine by one of the chefs and told to order our meals using the iPad on our table. I opted for the spiced wood-fired mussels. These were served in a subtly spiced tomato, lemon and chilli broth with a side of tripled cooked chips with aioli and kimchi salsa. The mussels were delicious and I really enjoyed the tomato flavours. It made for a refreshing change from the more traditional white wine garlic sauce. The triple fried chips were also fabulous. My friend selected the herb crusted sirloin as his meal. This was wood-roasted sirloin with burnt butter baby greens and crispy onion rings. It was served with a side of smoked cauliflower and parmesan gratin. My friend (also an avid foodie) and I both tried of little of each other’s meals too. I loved the sirloin meal. It was a real homely, nutritious and absolutely delicious meal. The smoked cauliflower was probably the best tasting cauliflower I’ve ever had! It really was amazing. For dessert we each had the salted almond meringue. This was wood-fired salted almond meringue served with vanilla crème, macerated strawberries and a mini sorbet. Wow, wow, wow! This was certainly my kind of dessert; sweet, fresh and creamy. Loved it!
I really enjoyed my experience at Chefs. The service was good. It’s perfect for a quick meal given how exceptionally efficient the process is right from the time of arrival. The setting is neat, simple and clean. It reminded me very much of canteen style restaurants in Europe… with far better quality food, however. I really loved the food. I could definitely envisage Chefs as a regular spot of mine if I lived in Cape Town. For now I’ll have to settle for a work lunch on my next trip to Cape Town.
