A few weeks ago I visited Doppio Zero at Cradlestone Mall for their “Wine Extravaganza” evening. Aside from enjoying a good meal, the wine extravaganza evening also boasted an array of wine farms that were stationed throughout the restaurant and offered a fabulous wine tasting experience.
One of my good friends – with a new found appreciation for wine – joined me for the evening. We started the evening by trying the wines of the first wine farm, Almenkerk Wine Estate, and then sat down to commence with our meals. The menu for the evening offered a choice of three starters, five mains and a dessert. I opted for the mozzarella croquettes for my starter. These were served with a chilli herb mayonnaise and tasted superb. My friend went for the steamed mussels served in a garlic and white wine cream sauce; another tasty starter. We then decided to try some more wine, this time from Spier, before continuing with our mains. For my main meal, I selected the steak. This was a 200g rump steak served with roasted marrow bone, black garlic butter and jus with a side of hand cut potato chips. My steak was perfectly cooked to my request and the marrow bone was rich in flavour. This was a great choice. My friend opted for the seafood curry which consisted of kingklip and mussels in a fragrant fresh ginger, turmeric, lemongrass and coconut milk curry. It was served with a side of steamed rice and fresh coriander with radish and spring onion salsa. The last wines we tried for the evening were from Oak Valley Estate. Each of the wine farms at the Doppio Zero Wine Extravaganza evening showcased around five to six varietals, making for a great evening of tasting. For dessert my friend and I shared a plate consisting of a mini pavlova with poached guavas, chocolate truffles, warm hazelnut brownies, strawberries and Nutella crepes. This was a lovely and tasty end to a delicious meal.
The service at Doppio Zero was good and we were well attended to on this very busy evening. The restaurant has a modern and trendy vibe to it and the food was great. The wine extravaganza evenings are a real treat for any wine lover. There were a number of wine farms present and the tastings were very generous. It’s certainly great value for money and an overall enjoyable experience. I look forward to visiting again soon.
