In December last year, prior to the holidays, I visited Roxanne’s Rum Eatery. Having heard much about the newly opened establishment in Fourways – notorious for the presentation of their ‘spiked’ shakes and risqué décor – I’d been looking forward to giving them a try for myself.
After arriving at Roxanne’s Rum Eatery on a bustling Friday night, we were seated at a table adjacent to the kitchen. I started with a cocktail, the ‘Sherry Britton’. This was a concoction of dark rum, cherry juice, pineapple syrup, grapefruit juice and mint. My benedict opted for the ‘Crimson Lips’ shake; Turkish delight ice cream with a shot of strawberry lips and pink vanilla rum. A potent shake at that! And who says ‘real men don’t drink pink drinks’ ;-) This shake really was delicious. We ordered the popcorn chicken waffle as a starter to share. Couldn’t resist the sound of that. The crumbed chicken strips were served on a homemade waffle with a side of popcorn, all drizzled in buttered rum syrup. The chicken strips were crunchy and tasty! It was certainly an interesting and uniquely served dish. It was beautifully presented, but to be honest I’m not sure it’s something I’d order to eat again. For my main meal, I selected the ‘Goth Burger’. This was a 150g beef patty with streaky bacon, tomato, cheddar cheese and mustard mayonnaise served on a black sesame seed bun. It was served with a side of curly fries. This was yet again, a really well presented and plated dish. And the burger and chips were good too! For dessert we had the ‘Sensual Cheesecake’ to share. This was a baked cheesecake with salted white chocolate and passion fruit. The cheesecake was sweet, delicious and beautifully served; drizzled in melted white chocolate, passion fruit and topped with a shard of white chocolate. I couldn’t really taste the saltiness advertised on the menu, but none the less I loved this dessert!
Roxanne’s Rum Eatery is certainly a popular and vibey choice for a Friday night. The restaurant was full and bubbly. If you’re keen to let your hair down with a group of friends, this is definitely the place to be. But be warned, the drinks could get a little pricey. I found the service to be slightly haphazard but they are a very recently established restaurant, so they’re likely to still be finding their rhythm and routine. I enjoyed the food at Roxanne’s Rum Eatery. The white chocolate cheesecake was certainly the winning dish and is a MUST for anyone planning to visit.
